The one knock against “Gently”? So much is going on here, the plot is so dense, this is a show that might be better off binged in a marathon. The tone bounces cannily from humor to pathos to suspense. Dourif’s off-kilter killer with no boundaries just might give you nightmares.

Barnett brings the right amount of snap and intelligence as the detective who believe he has no limits.

Wood is terrific as the alternately terrified, alternately exasperated everyman trapped in a world tilted full loony. And the most terrifying is the one they don’t know about - yet - Bartine Curlish (Fiona Dourif, “True Blood”), a holistic assassin who believes the world brings her the people she is meant to kill - and she’s itching to meet Dirk. There are several weird individuals all after Dirk or Todd or both, including the Rowdy Three, of which there are four. Todd realizes: “You’re a detective who doesn’t find clues. That’s an explanation, condensed for Twitter. “I’m trying to decide if you’re a clue or an accomplice … or an assistant,” he says.ĭirk is a holistic detective - one who solves crimes, by, well, letting the world bring the solution to him. “Well, some doors shouldn’t be opened,” the manager tells him.Īt home, he discovers an intruder - the odd Brit Dirk Gently (Samuel Barnett, “Penny Dreadful”). Police think Todd could have been involved, and his boss fires him. It tore them apart like taffy and left bite marks on the ceiling. Somebody - or something - killed a couple of guests. And then Todd runs into himself in a hotel. His sister Amanda (Hannah Marks, “The Real O’Neals”) badly needs money for her medications. His landlord Dorian (Ty Olsson) goes on a rampage for the rent and totals his car with a baseball bat. Seattle bellboy Todd Brotzman (Elijah Wood, “Lord of the Rings”) is having a bad day.

The series is “Sherlock” suffused with the DNA of “Twin Peaks,” “Lost” and “Benny Hill.” Based on the novels of Douglas Adams (“The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”), this is a delightful, addictive show. Where’s the show that’s smart and fun? The one you look forward to? The one that doesn’t feel like an obligation?īBC America to the rescue, with “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency.” That’s perhaps the most unwieldy show title ever, but please don’t be put off by it. NBC’s “This Is Us” might as well be sponsored by Kleenex and the onion growers of America. ABC’s “Designated Survivor” has already gone DOA. HBO’s “Westworld” is sumptuously produced but about as heartless as one of its bots.

Let’s call it: The fall TV season has been a bust. I’d like to read book 2, or re-read it, but book 1 hasn’t exactly inspired me… Overall, it’s far from a failure, but not as good as Hitchhiker. At last something good on TV to celebrate. I had no real recollection of quite a lot of this book, apart from the Electric Monk.

Perhaps it was the sequel - Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul - that amused me as a kid… I remember loving the title. But overall it was maybe a bit *too* clever. There are some wonderful touches, and Adams magic. The plot is just baffling - hopelessly elaborate. Now in my forties, I found it all a bit more of a slog, despite some fond memories. And it was a bit of an anti-climax… I’d read Dirk Gently in childhood and remember loving it. Dirk himself doesn’t turn up in person until well into the story, surprisingly. It’s readable, funny, and the characters are engaging - well, most of them. And it’s done with trademark Adams tropes, casual observational humour revelling in the weirdness of the universe - sci-fi juxtaposed with the banal and everyday.
